All the interesting things.

AUgust 2026

At around 60,000 words into Of Flame and Fern, I recently made a somewhat unexpected decision: the book needed a prologue.

It wasn’t something I had originally planned, but after a long hiatus from writing, the idea came together surprisingly quickly. The result is a slightly eerie, creepy introduction to the story, set in the forests of Tir Na Nog, and I really enjoyed the shift in tone. It gave me the chance to play with a darker atmosphere and a slow sense that something is very wrong.

It’s funny how unpredictable the creative process can be. Even this far into the manuscript, the story is still changing and finding new pieces that I hadn’t anticipated. More importantly, writing the prologue felt like finding my way back into Of Flame and Fern after being away from it for a while.

I’ve also commissioned a piece of artwork for the prologue, which I’m very excited to see and eventually share.

Apparently, 60,000 words in is not too late to decide your book needs a whole new beginning.

MAY 2026

It’s been almost a year since I last updated this blog, which honestly doesn’t feel real. Life looks very different now than it did when I was last properly writing. Most of my time these days is spent chasing sleep, routines, bottles, and a tiny human who somehow manages to take up every second of the day. Somewhere along the way, writing slipped into the background a bit — not because I stopped caring about it, but because I just didn’t have the brain space for it for a while.

Lately though, I’ve been slowly finding my way back into Of Flame and Fern. It’s been strange reopening drafts and stepping back into it after so long, but also really comforting. The story never really left me, even when I wasn’t actively working on it. Progress is definitely slower these days, but I’m excited to be writing again and spending time with these characters properly for the first time in a long while.

It’s been a little quiet around here lately, and I wanted to share why—I'm delighted to announce that I'm expecting a baby boy, due this September! Pregnancy has brought both joy and a few challenges, and it’s slowed my writing progress more than I’d hoped. But the story of Of Flame and Fern is still very much alive in my mind and heart.

To stay connected with the world of Thera and Caelin, I’ve commissioned several new pieces of artwork featuring them—small glimpses of the story I look forward to returning to soon. I’m hoping to carve out time for more writing before the baby arrives, and I can’t wait to share what’s next when the words begin flowing again. Thank you for your patience and support as this next chapter of life unfolds.

October 2024.

Hi everyone!

I’m excited to share a quick update on the progress of Of Flame and Fern. The novel is continuing to evolve, and I’m now in the final stages of drafting. There have been some exciting new developments in the story, especially as I dive deeper into Thera’s journey and her growing bond with Caelin Thorne. The world of elemental magic, fae intrigue, and complex relationships is really taking shape, and I can’t wait to share more with you.

As I work through the final chapters, I’m also refining earlier sections, making sure the story flows smoothly and the characters’ paths feel authentic. It’s been such a rewarding experience to see the story come together, and I’m looking forward to the next steps, which will include polishing and preparing the manuscript for its next phase.

Thank you for your continued support and patience on this journey. I’ll be sharing more updates soon, including some behind-the-scenes insights into the writing process and maybe even a sneak peek at a scene or two!

Stay tuned, and feel free to reach out with any questions or thoughts.

Until next time, Loren
